HDSC

 Support our local hospitals.
Contact Ray, KF6WZN at rayrittenhouse@verizon,net or Joe, W6UPN to learn more and volunteer. More hospitals are interested in our support. We need more operators to support this function properly. If you wish to perform Public Service, this looks as though it will be our most active function.

HDSC stands for Hospital Disaster Support Communications . It is a group of about 20 Amateur Radio ("ham") operators who have volunteered to provide backup internal and external communications for critical medical facilities in Long Beach, California  whenever normal communications are interrupted for any reason.

    Call - up responders

Call - up responders are individuals whom hospitals
contact whenever there is a communication failure ( such as
a telephone outage ) or overstress of regular communications facilities because of mass casualty incident or disaster.
The first HDSC operator that is contacted activates the addition members needed to provide an effective response to the effected hospital (s)

Members of core teams make an advance commitment to automatically respond to an assigned hospital, usually one near their home or work, without first being called in the event of a major area-wide disaster such as an earthquake.
If they are members of multiple Amateur Radio Emergency response group, Core Team members deploy first with HDSC in disaster that activate more than one group. Each hospital on the supported list has its own Core Team

Amateur Radio Emergency Service

 USING YOUR AMATEUR RADIO RESOURCE

The following are recommendations for activating the Amateur Radio Emergency Service.  Please keep your call-up list available for use in emergencies.  It is recommended that copies be kept at the PBX switchboard, the Nursing Office, Engineering, and with the disaster/safety coordinator.  For information, emergency services, drills or standby-by operations, please call: Ray Rittenhouse,KF6WZN, 562-860-5472 (home) or 949-254-4594 (cell), rayrittenhouse@verizon.net or Joe Provena ,W6UPN, 562-421-5996 (home) or 562-743-9030 (cell), w6upn@verizon.net.

EMERGENCIES:

(phone disruptions, power outage, evacuations, etc.)

Should any condition exist for 10 minutes or more at any time of day that has, or could, compromise your communications, internal or external, use your call-up list to activate the Amateur Radio Operators.  We will respond as quickly as possible.  Often the first radio operator will arrive within the hour but a full compliment of operators for your hospital could take longer to arrive and be in place.  Don't hesitate to call.  Even if phones return to normal during or just after our response, we will have at least one responder stay for a minimum of 30 minutes to make sure the system is functioning again.

In an area-wide disaster like an earthquake, the radio operators will attempt to respond as soon as possible to check on your facility.  It is also possible that a communicator may try to get through on the phones to determine your status.  Even if you indicate that things appear OK, they may call again to verify that the phone system as remained operational and that there are no further problems.  Should they not get through, they will respond to your location to check the status in person and remain to support your needs.

STAND-BY OPERATIONS: (phone or power upgrades, etc.)

Please contact us as soon as you are aware of communication problems, so we may provide a rapid response.

 DRILLS:

The earliest possible notification is appreciated to minimize disruption to our operator’s activities.
