General Membership Meeting on September 7, 2001                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

 

The meeting is held at the Signal Hill Community Center and called to order by President John Rogers KF6TTR at 7:15 p.m.  32 persons signed the meeting attendance book.

 

The Flag Salute is led by Vice President Ray Rittenhouse KF6WZN.

 

Visitors welcomed:  Robert Chatham KG6GOH, Los Angeles; Sam Velasco KD6VZL, Long Beach; Andrew Papp KG6GOK and mother Susan Papp, Culver City; and (not licensed) Sarah French of Lakewood, Scott Carpenter of Portland, OR and Barry S. Yolken of Long Beach.

 

Secretary’s Report:            Tom Gibbons W9EYB reports that the minutes for the August 3 General Membership Meeting and for the August 6 Board of Directors meeting (draft) are at the head table.  Most club business is done at the Board of Directors meetings.  The next director meeting is Monday, September 10, 7 p.m. at the home of Fred Wagner KQ6Q, Cypress.  Directions and a map are available on request.             

                                   

Treasurer’s Report:            Lisa Gibbons KF6QNG reports account balances as of August 31:  Cash $150.00, Checking $2,636.61, Savings $2,801.25, Scholarship Fund CD $2,030.91 and the Scholarship Savings Transfer Fund $5.41.

Announcements:            - The generous donation of many pieces of radio and related gear by Jim Young W7JL was accepted by the Board of Directors.  The special committee has nearly completed its  inventory.  A report with recommendations is expected at the next Board of Directors  meeting, with a report to the membership next month.

- The next Beach Cleanup is Saturday morning, September 15.  See Joe Provenza W6UPN for Long Beach ARES.

- Kid’s Day at Signal Hill Reservoir Park, September 22.

- The Friday club net now is 7:30 p.m. on 145.520 MHz simplex.  Hear club news.

- The Thursday ARES nets:  6:30 p.m. on 449.780 MHz repeater (131.8 PL) and 223.800 MHz repeater (156.7 PL), also at 6:45 p.m. on the 1.2 GHz repeater.  The 7 p.m. net on 145.520 MHz simplex for Los Angeles County ARES Southeast Section. Hear the weekly amateur radio news report starting at 6:45 p.m.

Testing Committee            Chair Tom Gibbons W9EYB reports ARALB monthly amateur radio testing, all classes, through the Greater Los Angeles Amateur Radio Group (GLAARG)  is next scheduled for Saturday, September 15, 9 a.m. at the California State University – Long Beach  Police station, 1331 Palo Verde Ave. (between university parking lots #9 and #11).    Enter university Lot #9 from Palo Verde Ave. (at its intersection southbound with Anaheim Road).  Follow the Testing signs North from Lot #9.  Pre-registration is

 

recommended through Don Boyce (562-420-9480).  Talk-in on the 449.780- MHz repeater (131.8 Hz tone).  Contact Tom at 562-529-8644.

W6RO Club Station            Wireless Room Station Manager Nate Brightman K6OSC reports the new 5-

The Wireless Room            element 10m-15m-20m HyGain beam and rotator are installed but not wired.  Still to arrive is the Mode B satellite array (2m/70cm).  It may be necessary to use the current azimuth/altitude rotors and controller.

 

W6RO QSL Cards:            A QSL Card chair and possibly some new committee members will be needed.  Wireless Room operators are reminded that QSL cards from your contacts are available to take after logged in by the committee.  Check with John Rogers KF6TTR.

 

Club Mug Sales:            You can still order ARALB mugs customized with your name and call sign.  They come in two sizes, small and large.  Two colors are available, Cobalt blue and black.  Contact John Rogers KF6TTR or Carol Apt KF6THS.

 

Long Beach ARES:            No report.

 

American Red Cross            No report.

Oscillator Newsletter:            The group present applauds Editor Carina Lister KF6ZYY for the excellent September issue and her recent past issues.  She reminds of the 15th of month deadline for articles and other information for the coming issue.  Carina’s contact information is in each newsletter.

 

New business:

                                   

Orange County Fair:            The president reports our club staffed 2 full Sunday shifts (12 hours each) and 1 Friday evening shift (4 hours) at the Amateur Radio Booth.  This is more support than in Year 2000.  Volunteers tell of enjoying the fair, and especially the contact with visitors.  Club flyers and other information were distributed. 

 

ARRL Southwest             This important, annual event is this weekend at the Riverside Convention Center.  This

Division Convention            is a wonderful opportunity to sell our club to the many persons attending.  Tickets may be purchased at the door.  Check the arrl.org website under “conventions” for details and contact information.  Plan to go!

 

Meeting Program            Members Dennis Kidder WA6NIA and Fred Wagner KQ6Q each present a significant,  early personal experience in Amateur Radio. 

                                   

Program (continued)            Next, the club W6RO Wireless Room manager, Nate Brightman K6OSC, returns to present his legendary “History of the Queen Mary liner and Our Wireless Room” slide show, personally narrated by Nate.  This is a wonderful and meaningful show!  The president presents a Certificate of Appreciation to Nate.

 

No member egg drawing tonight, the amount is $30.  No attendance prize offerings or drawing tonight.
