General Membership Meeting on October 5, 2001
The
meeting is held at the Signal Hill Community Center and called to order by Vice
President Ray Rittenhouse KF6WZN at 7:10 p.m.

Visitor welcomed: Daniel Van Beers (license expired) of Long Beach.
Secretary’s Report: Tom Gibbons W9EYB reports that the minutes for the September 7 General Membership Meeting and for the September 10 Board of Directors meeting (draft) are at the head table. Most club business is done at the Board of Directors meetings and members are welcome. The next director meeting is Monday, October 8, 7 p.m. at the home of Fred Wagner KQ6Q, Cypress. Directions and a map are available on request. The next General Membership Meeting is Friday, November 2, at 7 p.m., here.
Suggestions from members are wanted for the ARALB Ham of the Year 2001 Award. Contact Rick Silva WA6ES, the Year 2000 award winner. Also, nominations for ARALB officer-director and director positions are needed. The Nominating Committee (to be appointed by the president) will report at the November General Membership Meeting and the election held at the December meeting.
Treasurer’s Report: Lisa Gibbons KF6QNG reports account balances as of September 30: Cash $150.00, Savings $2,815.22, Checking $2,867.61, Scholarship Fund CD $2,030.91 and the Scholarship Savings Transfer Fund $5.43. She presents a Comparative Income Statement showing income for January 1 through September 30, 2001 as $6,595.70, expenses $5,396.07, and for the same Year 2000 period income $2,906.89 and expenses $3,336.61.
Lisa tells that ARRL reimbursements to clubs for a new ARRL member increased from $5 to $15.00, with none for renewals. A 2 year lapse of a prior ARRL membership is now required to qualify as a “new” ARRL member. The burden is now on the applicant to give correct prior information or the term of this new membership will be prorated by the ARRL based on funds received from ARALB (the ARALB retaining $15.00).

Announcements: - The Quarter Century Wireless Ass’n. will meet on Saturday, October 6, at 11:30 a.m. with a program on using the PSK-31 digital mode. Contact Dennis Kidder WA6NIA.
- The Year 2001 CW Sweepstakes will be November 3 and 4, 1300 hours Saturday through 1900 hours Sunday. Contact a club director if interested. (Fred Wagner KQ6Q)
- The Eagle Scout Court of Honor for member Robert Dalley KF6YGY is scheduled for November 18 at 3 p.m. ARALB members are invited. He is a member of Troop 126, Long Beach. Contact Robert for details. Congratulations, Robert!
- Kid’s Day at Signal Hill Reservoir Park, September 22, was a success with help by ARALB members. The next Signal Hill event is the Halloween Party on October 31. Club volunteers are needed. Please help. Contact Carol Apt KF6THS.

- The Thursday ARES nets: 6:30 p.m. on 449.780 MHz repeater (131.8 PL) and 223.800 MHz repeater (156.7 PL), also at 6:45 p.m. on the 1.2 GHz repeater. The 7 p.m. net on 145.520 MHz simplex for Los Angeles County ARES Southeast Section. Hear the weekly amateur radio news report starting at 6:45 p.m.

Testing Committee Chair Tom Gibbons W9EYB reports ARALB monthly amateur radio testing, all classes, through the Greater Los Angeles Amateur Radio Group (GLAARG) is next scheduled for Saturday, October 20, 9 a.m. at the California State University – Long Beach University police station, 1331 Palo Verde Ave. (between university parking lots #9 and #11). Enter university Lot #9 from Palo Verde Ave. (at its intersection southbound with Anaheim Road). Follow the Testing signs North from Lot #9. Pre-registration is
recommended through Don Boyce (562-420-9480). Talk-in on the 449.780- MHz repeater (131.8 Hz tone). Contact Tom at 562-529-8644. Fee $4 for up to all 4 elements, same session retests are also $4.
The Testing Committee will process routine license actions for only $2 (renewals, address or name changes, Vanity call sign {plus FCC fee], etc.). Testing at other times and locations may be arranged through Tom using the ARRL-VEC at $10, with $4 each to our club. More VEs are wanted for our testing program. We have the GLAARG-VEC and ARRL-VEC forms and will help with your accreditation!
Starting October 15 the FCC will no longer process license actions using a FCC Form 605 issued prior to March, 2001. Also the applicant’s date of birth and FCC CORES FRN “N” number (if you have one) must be shown on the form.
The SSN is still used as the Taxpayer ID. The ARRL-VEC and GLAARG-VEC will issue new 605 forms to conform to the changes.

W6RO Club Station Wireless Room Station Manager Nate Brightman K6OSC reports the 2m 1200 baud Packet Radio station is back in operation. Sign up for a packet user class to be offered soon at the Wireless Room through John Rogers KF6TTR.
W6RO QSL Cards: A QSL Committee chair and possibly some new committee members will be needed. Check with John Rogers KF6TTR. This is a great service to Wireless Room operators.
Club Mug Sales: You may still order ARALB mugs customized with your name and call sign. They come in two sizes, small and large, with 2 colors available: cobalt blue and black. Contact John Rogers KF6TTR or Carol Apt KF6THS.
Long Beach ARES: The Long Beach Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, November 11. Up to 50 Amateur Radio volunteers will be needed for the promised more challenging radio assignments. A meeting of radio volunteers with event officials is to be held soon.
The beach cleanup on Saturday morning, September 15, was a success. Radio support was by Long Beach ARES through many ARALB members. Grace Earl, the event manager, was impressed with the effectiveness of the 2-way radio support through experienced Amateur Radio communicators.

New business:
ARALB Web Page Robert Dalley KF6YGY and Tommy Kolat KD6ENO are the new webmasters for the ARALB internet web pages. They plan to keep the web pages current at the www.aralb.org site.
Meeting Program A Slow Scan Television program is offered by Frank Passmore N6DBL and Bob Diaz KQ6WQ, with demonstrations of old and new hardware, free software and more. Vice President Ray Rittenhouse presents a Certificate of Appreciation to Frank and Bob for this interesting program. Next, Ray presents a Certificate of Appreciation to the club W6RO Wireless Room manager, Nate Brightman K6OSC, who repeated the legendary “History of the Queen Mary liner and the W6RO Wireless Room” slide show at our September meeting. This program was personally narrated by Nate, with 22 years experience at W6RO.
The member egg drawing name tonight is Frank Spencer KA6BUY at $30. Frank left the meeting a short time earlier, forfeiting this attendance prize. The amount starts over at $5 for the next meeting.
