Wilson Radio Team is Successful in First Major Drill

Wilson High School’s students decided after the area code (562) outage in October to do something positive to help become part of the city’s communication solution. Six students (five pictured) successfully conducted a radio team drill when 4,700 students were evacuated during an earthquake simulation on November 23rd.
With the help of Gordon West, WB6NOA, Sibyl Kierns KA6RXX, and Robert Dalley KF6YGY, students successfully contacted the Long Beach Emergency Communication Operations Center, the Long Beach Yacht Club’s repeater, and local simplex frequencies. Students were also able to monitor emergency frequencies and school emergency frequencies in order to keep a log of how the drill proceeded.
The team will finish their course work and take their exams for their amateur radio licenses next
February. Principals Alex Flores and Joe Pistoia were very impressed with the new radio teams’ performance. These students are a great example of good kids helping their community in Long Beach.
